Gypsum board and fiber cement board are both used in European wall construction, but they are fundamentally different products designed for different performance requirements.
Gypsum board (plasterboard, drywall) consists of a gypsum core between two paper faces. It is light, easy to work, and inexpensive — making it the dominant interior partition material across Europe.
Fiber cement board consists of cement, fibreglass reinforcement, and lightweight aggregates. It weighs more than gypsum, costs more, and requires different tools — but it performs fundamentally differently under moisture, fire, and impact.

Fire performance: system vs material
Both products achieve fire resistance through the tested wall system — not the board alone. The classification (EI 60, EI 90, E120) belongs to the complete assembly: frame, insulation, board thickness, and fixing pattern.

The fire test report FIRES-CR-284-25-AUPE documents a specific wall assembly. This must be replicated exactly for the classification to apply. Substituting any component — including the board — requires re-testing or engineering justification.

Moisture resistance: where gypsum fails
The gypsum core absorbs moisture when wet:
- Gypsum swells, causing surface cracking and joint failure
- Paper facing absorbs moisture, providing a food source for mould
- Over time, the core loses compressive strength and the board may fail
Terasun TSM is dimensionally stable when wet. It contains no gypsum. Cement-mineral matrix does not absorb water in the same way — confirmed by EN 12467 Category A moisture classification.

Impact resistance: commercial environments
Gypsum board punctures and dents easily under impact. Fiber cement board's dense mineral matrix provides significantly higher impact resistance — reducing maintenance costs in schools, hospitals, warehouses, and retail.

Is fiber cement board more expensive than gypsum?
Fiber cement board typically costs more per m² than standard gypsum board but is comparable to specialised moisture-resistant or fire-rated gypsum variants. The lifetime cost comparison often favours fiber cement in wet or exterior applications where gypsum requires early replacement.
Can fiber cement board replace gypsum board in all situations?
Technically yes, but it is not always economical or necessary. In standard dry interior partitions with no moisture, fire, or impact exposure, gypsum board is lighter, easier to cut, and cheaper. Use fiber cement where its specific performance advantages justify the additional cost.
Does fiber cement board require special tools to cut?
Terasun TSM can be cut with an angle grinder (diamond disc), circular saw (fiber cement blade), or score-and-snap for straight cuts. It is harder to cut than gypsum board. Always wear respiratory protection when cutting — cement dust is a respiratory irritant.
