When specifying sheathing for ventilated facade systems or exterior wall assemblies, European contractors and architects face a choice between several board types. Oriented strand board (OSB) and fiber cement board are two of the most commonly discussed options. This article provides a factual, technical comparison to help you choose the right product for your project.


What is OSB?

Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is a wood-based panel product manufactured by compressing and bonding wood strands with resins. It is widely used in timber frame construction for wall and roof sheathing. OSB is available in several grades: OSB/2, OSB/3 (moisture-resistant), and OSB/4 (structural, high humidity).

What is Fiber Cement Board?

Fiber cement board (also called fibre cement board or FCB) is an inorganic building board manufactured from Portland cement, inorganic fillers, and reinforcing fibres. It does not contain wood or organic binders.

Moisture Performance

Moisture is one of the most significant differences between OSB and fiber cement board.

OSB/3 is classified for humid conditions, but it remains a wood-based product. In ventilated facade systems, OSB can be exposed to bulk water ingress during construction or through facade failures. Prolonged wetting causes swelling, edge delamination, and long-term structural weakening. OSB also provides a food source for mould growth if moisture levels remain elevated.

Fire Performance

Is fiber cement board better than OSB for facades?

For ventilated facade systems, fiber cement board is technically superior: it is non-combustible (Class A1), dimensionally stable when wet (EN 12467 Category A), and resistant to mould. OSB is combustible (Class D) and can swell significantly when wet.

Can OSB be used on exterior facades?

OSB/3 has some moisture resistance but is not recommended for direct exterior exposure in ventilated facades, especially in wet climates. It swells and can delaminate over time when repeatedly wetted.
