Fiber Cement Board vs Plywood: Exterior and Facade Applications Compared

Plywood and fiber cement board both appear in architects' specifications for exterior wall sheathing, facade systems, and wet rooms. They differ fundamentally in material composition, fire behaviour, moisture performance, and regulatory compliance. This guide compares them for common European construction applications.


Material Composition

Plywood is a wood-based panel product manufactured by bonding thin veneers of wood with resin under heat and pressure. Exterior-grade plywood uses phenol-formaldehyde or melamine-urea resin for improved moisture resistance. It is an organic, combustible material.

Fiber cement board (FCB) is an inorganic product manufactured from Portland cement, inorganic fillers, and reinforcing fibres. It contains no wood, no organic binders, and no asbestos. It is non-combustible.

In Europe, facade materials for buildings above 18 m height are typically required to be Class A1 or A2 under the Construction Products Regulation and national transpositions. Standard and even fire-retardant-treated plywood does not meet this requirement.

At 12 mm, the two products are comparable in weight. For facade applications where 8–10 mm fiber cement board is typically used, the weight advantage over structural plywood becomes more pronounced.

Frequently asked questions

Can plywood be used on ventilated facades?

Exterior-grade plywood can be used on low-rise ventilated facades where fire class D is acceptable. For buildings over 18 m or where A2 materials are required, plywood does not meet European fire regulations for facades.

Is fiber cement board heavier than plywood?

At 12 mm, Terasun TSM fiber cement board weighs 9.96 kg/m², which is comparable to 12 mm structural plywood at 7–8 kg/m². However, facade applications typically use 8–10 mm fiber cement board, which is lighter than structural plywood at equivalent spans.

Does fiber cement board need surface treatment for exterior use?

Terasun TSM fiber cement board is suitable for exterior use without additional sealing. For aesthetic finishing, it can be painted with standard exterior mineral or silicone paints. Cut edges should be sealed with an appropriate primer or edge sealant.
